It's going to be a long night for the horses tonight...Big 18th birthday party in the neighbour's shed and they have started already. 10 meters-ish from our boundary. Yay. At least they warned us, and since they are the local hoons and petty crims I have warned the police, who have done one drive-by already. I'm a bit nervous of how the night will pan out but pretty sure they will leave the horses alone. I've checked the electric fence is working, but I wish I still had big ferocious dogs!

You should have left of training Nigel no Mates and used him as a guard pony

Nigel is in the home paddock at the moment, and I won't mind at all if he reverts to chasing people, just this once!

Tizzy is back in work and going great. I am planning her first competition in 5 weeks time. Have loads of work to do in the 'socializing' area as she stresses about horses coming up behind her or coming too close. I suppose that is the pitfall of being ridden on her own and in an arena most of the time. I have joined an adult riding group which I go to weekly which I am sure will help. The actual dressage should be ok as long as I can keep her attention. It is very exciting. I feel very privileged having such a horse. :-)

Whats the best way to soften new leather? Got a gorgeous new halter from Sparrows yesterday but it needs some serious oiling. How do I get it nice and supple? I suck at softening new leather!

Buy a really good leather conditioner - not oil - and work it in every day for a week. I like the Kieffer or Stubben brands of leather conditioner. Have treated new saddles and leather bridles like this with good results.

Quite Urgent. Does anyone here know the size or code of the rotor discs on a TB float (Luxury liner)? TIA
Reply
  Jamie's Hand Maiden   Sth Auckland  9:20PM    03-Feb-12
You will have to ring Top Notch if not tomorrow then Tuesday because the rotors will be specific to the type of rim and hub you have, as they may have records if they are the originals. Not all rotors are equal so unless you take the rotor off and it has part numbers/markings, you will be guessing. EG Some people who bodgy things or do a home-built job might use old hubs and axle stubs off say a 78 Ford Falcon, so the discs will be whatever go with that, make sense?

what would be better - market harborough or draw reins for keeping horse in an ever so slightly more consistant frame/neck in canter? just curious as to what people prefer over the other and why - not after schooling/training advice. just a hypothetical question. TIA

I'd prefer a Bungy...
Reply
  veronica   cambridge  8:58PM    03-Feb-12
My preference is market harborough. I find with draw reins that even when loose the weight of them still sits on the bit, plus you have two sets of reins in your hands and have to be quite skillful to bring the draw rein into effect when you want it and leave it alone the instant the horse responds. With a market harborough you only have the one set of reins and if fitted correctly should only have an effect if the horse gets above a certain point and be completely loose when the horse is working correctly. You can completely ignore it and still work on teaching the horse the correct response to the aids if it goes above the bit, but have the back up there if needed. And the release is instant when the horse gives, rather than waiting for the rider to soften after the horse responds.

Bungy or Market harbourgh are my picks in that situation

  Haylee   whangarei  9:26PM    03-Feb-12
Prefer market for exactly reasons above - if the horse is correct it is loose only coming into play as needed...much nicer for young horses.

Market Harborough, what Veronica said.

I also like that MH has no effect if you put your hands forward to loosen it off. EG if horse has catastrophic reaction to pressure and rears you cna put your hands forward and it loosens. I know draw eins are the same but can get dangly in that situation. Worked really well on a mare with a sensitive mouth from past abuse who would toss head when felt pressure. MH gave her pressure to get used to, I could slacken if needed.

There is nothing to compare with the deep peace and calm of spending quality time being one with a horse. One of those successful laid back schooling times. I feel i can breathe again.

Can I swap your horse for mine then? Horse who has of late been being well behaved suddenly decided to turn into hideous bucking, snorting, rearing monster incapable of trotting two full circles on the lunge today ('cos he's scared of new goats next door) - made for a very high stress episode in what had been a good day! Stupid prat seems to think that 2 small goat kids will eat him for breakfast..

Hi Does anyone know if Ariat boots and styles are all the same sizing? Or do some styles range in size a bit from other styles.. Just ordering from over US and sick of getting the size wrong and selling them cheap!.. It's a western boot.. but I have other English short boots that I know the size of.Thanks

  Jamie's Hand Maiden   Sth Auckland  6:30PM    03-Feb-12
i have found them fairly consistent. I take a 35-36EU / 5.5-6NZ and got a sz 6 in ariat laceup ankle boots and they were fine. Have tried the mules in 6 also and they too are good and had a pair of the classic II chaps and they were fine also off the sizing chart. I think the sizing on the ariat charts is fairly accurate. JME of course.

Mine fit slightly smaller...but that's the h20 boot, padded etc. PD may be able to say, her hubby as Ariat westerns:-)

The Terrains have a rep for running large. I have Ariat jod boots and those are true to size. Hugh has Ariat Ropers are true also.
