How many of you out there have always dreamed of winning something special? Well my dream came true on the first of September 1996.
lt all began when I entered a competition in the Western Leader. The prize was to win a pony for a year. Mum and dad encouraged and supported me in every way. My job was to write an essay on why I should win a pony.
A month later I received a letter saying me six other girls and I had been selected out of eighty seven other children to be interviewed. The big day soon arrived, and my whole family had to be interviewed. I have never been so nervous in my whole life. The judges were really nice and made us feel at home. We were told the final decision would be made the same day. All that day I sat by the phone waiting and finally at 5:0'clock I grabbed the phone. It was Grant Kelly, one of the people that had interviewed me. When he told me I was one of three lucky girls that had won, all I could do was scream out to mum and dad I had won, nearly deafening Grant at the same time! A week later I met the other winners Angela and Jessica. We were paired up with the pony that suited us the best. My beautiful pony is called Renee, and I loved her from the minute I saw her and we have been winning lots of ribbons together ever since. |

About a month ago dad decided to take me down Whitianga to try out a pony he had heard about through a friend, as the time was approaching quickly when I would have to give beloved Renee back. Well things started out well at first, the pony looked lovely, his name was Cracker Jack, he was a bay and he stood 13.1 hands high. I was lucky enough to go on a four hour trek with his owner up in the mountains. Cracker Jack seemed perfect, so dad arranged to have him for a two week trial. After giving him a good groom at my house, dad decided his tail was too long, so he cut it. When I stood back I couldn't believe my eyes, dad had cut his tail past Cracker Jack's hock. All I could say was "Dad!, what have you done!" It looked awful, needless to say dad has been teased by everyone at the pony club ever since.
From the first day mum was concerned because CrackerJack was hard to catch, but the last straw was when CrackerJack took off with me on him and wouldn't stop. I have never'been so scared in my life! Luckly Grant Kelly was there and managed to grab Cracker Jack. Needless to say I fell off. I wasn't hurt but I was shaking all over. After that mum arranged lessons for me. My instuctor, Debbie Kelly, said "Cracker Jack is too much for me to handle" and she could tell I had lost my confidence in the pony. After the two weeks were up dad took Cracker Jack back to Whitianga - much to my relief. Well I am still looking for the right pony, but I know in my heart there will never be another pony like my Renee. So you see my dream came true, so don't ever give up on your dream. |
