Bringing injured horses back into work...what to do? My normally very quiet mare bucked me off a beauty today when she went bronco as soon as I got on. She got a fright and I'm guessing the girth tickled a little and holy moly away she went. I don't want to lunge her because I don't want her running around in tight circles after such a bad injury. I guess she's also feeling good with the spring grass too but she was very naughty the whole ride. Kept rounding her back and trying it out again. I'd have loved to have given her a decent ride but I've only been taking her quietly and just been working on strengthening the leg again. Any tips please? Oh and what sort of toxin binder do you all prefer? I'm going to get some! TIA

Have my two on digest rite and they have been great no silly spring behaviour. I would get her checked over for pain also if she went sore no doubt she has compensated for the injury and probably has abit of muscle soreness. When starting a new horse or bringing one back in i prefer to start out with a few massage session just to be sure i am starting with a clean slate and horse has no excuses.

hey jo, equi guard is fantastic as well as using magnesium to. i second ponying the naughty girl or long reining. long reining is good because you can go in straight lines as well as doing a couple of circles inbetween.

How much grass is she on? I am trying to be VERY strong and ignoring all the 'we are starving, looks, calls, neighs etc' as (minis aside - because they are on dirt) one is in 'starvation (no such thing at this time of year) and the other only gets a teeny tiny bit of 'new' grass every 2-3 days... Other than that I only use dolomite

Hi Jess I have been ponying her with all her gear then I'd swap over half way round and ride her home and lead Raspberry.
There is plenty of grass but I try to keep her on the shorter stuff. My friend put her horses in first and when they have eaten the best stuff I put her in to chew it right down. Seems she is still getting loads of good stuff out of it though.

Jo, i am pretty sure the shorter the grass the worse it is for creating spring fever. Can't remember exact reason but the longer grass is better.

Depends what the main of you work in it will be - if lunging 15m but if riding 20m. Ours is 15m. Excellent for lunging, okay for riding but with the fenced arena next to it don't too much riding in it other than starting the younger/inexperienced ones (or anything we think might take flight!) Personal preference comes into it too I guess.

So to expand on this question (if I may) - if you had limited land would you rather have a 20m round pen comfortably or a 40 x 20 arena at a squeeze? We have 4 decent sized paddocks (approx an acre each), 1 smaller paddock and a paddock the would contain said riding area which will also house a 3 bay shed and a couple of yards, but that leaves limited space where a riding surface 'would work' with the rest of the property (we are on 6 acres).

Ours is 15m same as beep's, can ride in it, but mostly use to start the youngsters in and lunge. Lisa i dont know if i could choose, both have different yet equally important roles.

Depends on your riding style Lisa. I'd rather have the 20x40 arena, you can always fence that to be a double sized square pen LOL.

*sigh* I know and I would prefer the arena and hubby and I have marked it out and it is doable but at a squeeze... Would essentially mean that you tacked up in the 3 bay and walked out approx 3-5 metres then you would be in the arena..... Would that work?

but of course! You're going to be riding IN the arena, you don't need to be able to ride TO the arena LOL. Would be perfect for my lazy ass! In fact I recall seeing pics of Louisa Hill's place as an Amercian Style Barn with the stables underneath (what we styled our place off) and her arena is right outside the doors to the stables so you could look off the balcony upstairs down into the arena. Makes sense to have it compact to me!

So is 20m an okay compromise? The reason I ask is I seem to remember somewhere that a 30m is easier for the youngsters (working from the ground or riding?)

Has anyone heard of a TB thats only 13.2hh been any good on the track *picks self of floor after laughing so hard chair collapses* I dragged our yearling colt in today to do some educating after not doing anything over winter and it appears his EMH is only 13.2hh. Hubby not impressed I think its kinda funny really! Sire is 15.3hh and dam about 16hh so he is supposed to be bigger!!! Been done well right through from conception so not a feed issue! Is leading and tying up nicely so maybe lead rein pony for the kids!!!

Is this the dams first foal? Often they can be small if its a first foal....we have a 4yo gelding that would be 14hh and his Dam (was a maiden mare) and is 16hh Whilst you probably wanted to have this horse as a potential Melbourne Cup horse and can understand hubbys frustration, I think a 13.2 TB would be an ideal pony, and will be worth 10 times more as a pony than a hack off the track would go for. Wasnt McGinty only around 14.2.......big things come in small packages!!!

Yep one mare we have, her first foal was real small and so slow she never ended up racing, now the mares 3rd foal was so small as a yearling he could hardly see over a normal size gate (no lies), he was going to be sacked then and there but instead he was gelded and put out in the back paddock of farm on hills and only grass and hay (odd feed) for 9 months, he come back in nearly 15.2, now hes nearly 16.1 6 months later. So wish we got before and after pics as not many ppl can believe it.

Aw poor lil TB's that dont know they are 'supposed' to be 'big' racehorses! LOL! My wee boy who was gonna be ditched due to too-small-ness, came here as a 15mo at around 14hh, hes just over a pony (I'm guessing) now at nearly 2yrs....butt is going up again though! He was a first foal too.

A friend's TB came from long lines of large horses - dam and sire were 16.3 and 17 hh respectively. She ended up 14.2 on the dot... had a succesful SJ career, made it to A grade (now that was back in the day; pony was in her 20s when my friend got her 12 years ago).

I have possibly solved the problem of Miss 4 not been happy on pony. Yesterday I put the pony pad on him and she sat there quite happily playing games while standing still but when moved she got all unsteady. Today just put her on bareback and she was happy to be led around. Thinking it might the pony pad not sitting very well. They do move a bit so my next question si would anyone have a small leather saddle that they would lend (or sell) to see how she goes for a couple of rides. She is only 4 but 112cm tall so maybe even a 15inch would be ok. Pony is just over 10hh (i think) and has a tabletop for a back!!

Joanna its just one of those wintec pony pads with the handle and synthetic which can be 'bouncier' than leather thats also why I wondered about a 'proper' saddle (wide or xtra wide gullet) maybe it wouldn't 'roll'! TTM - Her 'sire' is 6' and 'dam' just under so she really doesn't have much chance of been short! Shes a skinny little weed too so not that heavy!
