Hay advice please. Our hay seems wetter now than it was 2 weeks ago when we first bought it. We thought it was dry but because it was green stacked it with lots of space between bales in the covered yards so that the breeze could get around it but it still got quite hot in the centre of the bale, and now some of them have gone mouldy already. I've dragged it all out to be in the sun for a couple of days in an attempt to save some of it, but is there anything else I can do?

Looking for advice please - I need to buy a halter for my young boy. He is TB/WB X and BIG! I prefer leather, what brand/type do others use?

Depends on how young and his likelihood of damaging or killing it. If there is a chance the SW ones are too bad for a real cheapie

He is 3 and not much chance of destroying it, only wear it while training or grooming etc, never in the paddock. Have just emailed Tom O'Sullivan to hopefully order a nice leather one :-)

Im having to strip graze Cory as there is so much grass in his paddock but possibly he isn't getting enough input if you know what I mean. Its a tricky one as I don't want him to pig out on grass and get fat!

Any friendly mechanics around? My BMW has just flicked a red warning light on which isn't in the manual! Sort of two almost straight, but not quite horizontal lines with wavey lines above. Sure those are telling me it's hot??? Yes I will call garage in morning but if it can be driven need to go to work early

Hiya, definitely not a mechanic, but from personal experience that is the over heating warning.

It has something to do with the exhaust system getting hot (catalytic converter failure). Should be ok to drive but you might find it underpowered.

Can i ask your opinion on a price check on a vehicle please- White 97 Nissan Terrano Regulus, top of the line model, wood grain interior etc, 3.2L turbo diesel. Immaculate condition, one 70yr old man owner and me. Serviced regularly, wof and rego til june. Done around 220kms. Im wondering if im selling too cheap. Have only decided today to sell it, thought id ask around 8K for it and have had loads of people asking about it already. Havent put it on trademe or anything yet but what would people say its worth?
Reply
  Beth   Sanson  5:10PM    09-Feb-12
I'm suprised at the interest - I'd think the price was fairly fair, if not a little steep. We bought a 1996 Mistral (smaller Terrano engine but 7 seater) with 148k on it about 2 years ago for $5k, could prob sell for about $3,500 to $4k now? Perhaps the 3.2L engine + specs makes a big difference?
Reply
  Denise   Blenheim  6:09PM    09-Feb-12
Wouldn't compare the two - I drove a friends Mistral once (for a fair distance) - thought it was awful compared to my 3.2l Terrano.

I have exact same vehicle, same kms. I've owned it since new (well it came into the country with 200kms on the clock via a dealer friend). Full service history with mine too. I think you have it too cheap. I am told mine is worth $10K. My insurance company has its replacement value at just over $11K.

Advice please - I am advertising a job (Animal Welfare Manager at a small SPCA) and want to maximise the money spent advertising. local paper has not netted enough - neither has internal advertising. i am looking at either seek.co.nz ($170 +gst) or TM jobs ($149). which should i try or does someone have a better idea? NZ Herald costs around the same for just one or two ads

When hubby was looking for job we found it with seek, trade me was always first port of call follwoed by seek. What about networking and putting it on facebook to share around or is that unprofessional?

Does Unitec still teach the course? maybe they could email out to past graduates for you - most likely for free. Also suggest Student job search - free and may be people who have qualification but are back studying other things but want a change?

When we advertised we used trade me and then a day after listing seek contacted us and offered to run our ad for free so that in the future we might consider them instead of trade me, we got more local interest through trademe, seek brought alot of internationals with no visas etc.

Sara if you email me skripstar@gmail.com I will ask the alumni manager at unitec if there's anything they can do tomorrow :) Out of interest, which branch is it for (I know someone who recently completed a Animal Welfare course and I'm not sure if she found a job yet).

thanks for the feedback folks - i will go with TM since it is a fair bit cheaper. Vanessa I have already put the ad through Unitec's alumni contacts :0) might also ask the other polys to do the same.

Tank is a bunny killer ... May have to report him to the 'organisation' though. Old boy Blue obviously forgot to instill in Tank the idea of a quick clean kill :/ Tank's idea of kill is toss, throw, catch, chase, pounce for approx 10 mins. And trust me, if anything survived that, I would have stepped in and saved it LOL I'm thinking he may have been feline in a previous life but embarrassed them so much he had to come back as a K9. The amount of energy expended for a wee 30cm bunny (at a stretch - literally!) was quite sad really.

I had to rescue a baby hedgehog yesterday who had got him self lost in the middle of the road, kept going round in circles so grabed him and put him in the paddock before he got himself killed. Recieved a round of appaluse from some cyclists :)

Aw I love hedgepiggles, Katrena :o) I always rescue those. Could always tell when the beagles had one bailed up somewhere - their call was blood curdling though completely harmless. Poor hedgies were probably deaf by the time we rescued them and put them elsewhere lol

Some of you may remember those 2 emaciated horses we saved in 2007 which ended up being looked after by Legup trust:
RIP Fantasy It is with much sorrow that we report the sudden death of our beloved Fantasy, one of the two horses we rescued in an emaciated condition in 2007. Fantasy was on loan at a remote hill country property and had given birth to a beautiful foal seven weeks earlier. She was found four or five days after her death, with her foal still trying to suckle her. Fortunately a dry but motherly mare had adopted him and was keeping a friendly eye on him. He has now been removed to another property to be hand reared. Fantasy was one of our best-loved horses and is sorely missed by all who knew her. Rest in peace brave Fantasy. You had some hard times in your life but your last four years were spent in the lap of luxury, and we were privileged to have you for that time. Fantasy?s two year old son is a living reminder of his mum and he promises to be a spectacular horse, as does the young foal.

Sorry but lap of luxuary but was only found four to five days after she died doesn't add up to me unless I am missing soemthing important? Actually makes me feel quite sick

just sat this on there face book page "he is now 3 months old and still with the dry mare who adopted him, but he is drinking from a bucket. Unfortunately, at some stage he has injured himself and has cracked vertebrae at the top of his neck so needs to have his neck gently manipulated to help him heal" not having much luck with there horses in outside care as the mare was when she died.

sounds like they were 3 hours from civilization when she died, so yes Id say that is living the life of luxury, they were on a big station doing their own thing, as long as there was food (which looking at the tummy on her and her paddock there was ample) and shelter she had everything she needed to be perfectly happy. RIP Fantasy.

well I dont think it is unreasonable to expect a horse to be checked on more then once every four days.......

or a kaimanawa or gisborne bred or alot of stationbreds.... just because its not how we would do it doesnt mean the horses love just being wild ponies!!
Reply
  gretly   Gilads Home  4:28PM    09-Feb-12
yes but this horse wasn't a wild pony. But heven forbid if I am upset at the thought of a horse left to die with an orphan foal trying to feed off her and that I hardly think that that situation is the life of luxuary. Or that its a really sad ending for a horse that had suffered so much and to think maybe she deserved more.

Without knowing the full story I can understand Gretly's response. A mare with a young foal should ideally be checked on regularly - much more regularly than every 4-5 days. It doesn't really matter what size the property is care of babies and their mums is the same.

Rachel (HB)   Doting grandma  5:13PM    09-Feb-12
I agree with Sara and Gretly, in this case. She wasn't a hardy stationbred and more could have been done. Sad for Ros, after all the work she and her organisation had put in.

Ive got to say ditto with Rachel HB . This makes me very sad . I guess the image of a foal trying to suckle off its dead mum will tug at any horse lovers heartstrings. I hope she didn't suffer at all.I do however know that this is a reality on stations.
