The NZQHA is a breed association, affiliated to the American Quarter Horse Association, formed to keep and preserve records and pedigrees of all Quarter Horses in New Zealand, whether locally bred or imported. All stallions are classified at three years of age before they are entered into the NZQHA registry. Imported stallions are also classified before entry into the registry. All foals are identified, branded and progeny recorded wile still on their darns, then between the age of two and three years they are registered with the association.
The NZQHA promotes the Quarter Horse whenever and wherever possible, holding Halter classes at every A&P show where western performance events are held. At one time the NZQHA held western performance events at shows but these are now governed by the New Zealand Western Riding Federation.
The American Quarter Horse Association sends a judge of high standing to officiate at the NZQHA National Show which is held annually. This judge also holds clinics while here to inform and up-date our own judges and members on matters pertaining to shows and contests.
