Situated at 600m these gardens feature mature trees, including monkey puzzles and maples. A 1,000 year old totara is underplanted with olearias and rengarenga lilies.

Primulas and trilliums give early colour, camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas follow.

Two ponds flowing into the moat, spanned by bridges, are edged with hostas and irises. Paeonies, cardiocrinum giganteum and dahlias feature in the summer as do fuchsias. Rock gardens feature fritillarias and gentians.

Cottage and herb gardens surround Granny's Cottage Museum. Doves fly free while the aviary has finches and bourkes.

The snowcapped Ruahine Ranges are enhanced by the Autumn colours.
