Thermal Valley Open for Walking Tours

One of the most unique geological areas in the Far North is open to the public for the first time in decades.

  Hidden Walks Ancient Kauri

The  Ngawha thermal valley near Kaikohe lies on five hectares with attractions include bubbling mud and two of the most active mineral pools in the Ngawha area, an abandoned mercury mine, and preserved remains of kauri forests destroyed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago.

The area is filled with the noises of thermal activity which Mrs Beadle-Taylor said had  been described as "like the sound of scuttling crabs on the foreshore".

Hidden Walks Bubbling Mud

Guided walks of up to two hours are planned through the valley, which Mrs Beadle-Taylor said had been mostly undisturbed for up to 100 years.

The  historic mercury mine in the area were worked in the 1890s and also from 1927-34 and 1941-45.
