Kaikohe has a strategic position in the centre of the province of Northland, providing shopping and service facilities for an extensive farming district.  As the central pivot of the twin coast Discovery Route, Kaikohe is best described by the symbol of the wheel representing the 'Hub of the North'

Shopping is well catered for with various National Chain retailers, Variety and Furniture Shops, Garden Centres, Hardware, Stationers, Sports Equipment, Computerware and Farm and Machinery Supplies along with Automotive Services and Car Sales. These, plus a variety of Second Hand shops and three Supermarkets make Kaikohe the place to go for one stop shopping.

Historically, the town is the shopping and service centre for a farming, horticultural and forestry community and businesses support these activities.   Services include Real Estate, Legal and Accounting Services, Farm and Orchard Supplies, Heavy and Light Machinery Maintenance, Engineering, Stock Firms, Veterinary Services and other general services.   An award-winning Community Newspaper, (The Northern News), also serves the town.

Banking is provided by many of the NZ Banking facilities including the National Bank, Westpac, ASB and the Bank of New Zealand

Parks, such as the popular Memorial Park provide tree shaded picnic tables and children's playgrounds.   The Kaikohe Library Square and playground houses the public toilets, painted with scenes of times gone by.  This Park, situated between the main shopping centre and Marino Place provides parking and access to the main street.
