Wildlife Sculpture - Native Birds
A unique, large, flightless and nocturnal parrot. Less than 50 of these severely endangered birds have been located in a remote area of Stewart Island. 22 were relocated to Little Barrier and Codfish Islands. They have had only limited success in breeding but supplementary feeding is increasing their prospects. Currently under intensive monitoring by the Conservation Department.
The main dangers for the kakapo are stoats, rats, feral cats and dogs.
